Farinata gave himself totally to preparing the insurrection of his faction and obtained from Manfredi a reinforcement of 800 German knights, he came to the battle of Montaperti (4 September 1260), where Farinata’s military value rose above all, so that the Guelphs were annihilated.

In Florence, Farinata died in 1264, two years before the battle of Benevento which marked the definitive decline of the Swabian power in Italy and the definitive return of the Guelphs to Florence. After the defeat of the Ghibellines in Benevento, in which Manfredi, who had become the standard-bearer of the Ghibelline hopes, also lost his life, the Uberti in 1267 were exiled for the second time.
